Where neighbours become good friends! Neighbours' Ramsay Street is Melbourne's most famous TV location, attracting thousands of pilgrims every year. Scott and Charlene's famous wedding took place at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church of Doncaster.

Kath Day-Knight's house in Kath & Kim is owned by the ABC who rent it out in-between filming. Other locations include Knobs & Knockers (736 -742 Hampton St, Brighton), Kim and Brett's Unit (19 Lagnicourt Street, Hampton) and The Buckingham International Hotel (1130 Nepean Highway, Highett).

The Art Deco tower, formerly serving as the Russell Street Police Headquarters, provided exteriors for the long running crime drama Homicide (1964-1976).

The Acland Street apartment block provided exteriors for the home of the characters of The Secret Life of Us. Their rooftop parties, however, took place on top of another block down the road, looking out over St Kilda icons the Palais Theatre and Luna Park.

Round the Twist
Split Point Lighthouse, Aireys Inlet
Built in 1891, the Split Point Lighthouse at Aireys Inlet (on the Great Ocean Road about 90 mins from Melbourne) doubles as a home for the Twist family in the Australian Childrens Television Foundation's Round the Twist.

You can stay the night in Laura's beach house from SeaChange - it's owned by the local caravan park in Barwon Heads. The Pearl Bay Courthouse was actually filmed in Melbourne, at the Williamstown Lifesaving Club (The Esplanade, Williamstown).

A goldfields setting - including 60 canvas tents - was recreated for the ABC production Rush on a 230 acre property at Lysterfield.

The Sullivans
Most of the filming was done around the suburb of Canterbury due to its proximity to the studios of Crawford Productions. The south verandah of the Old Arts Building at the University of Melbourne featured briefly as a market place in wartime Cairo!

The Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind was used as the setting for the underfunded and mismanaged St Christopher's Hospital in the 1992 comedy series Let the Blood Run Free.

Greyhound Hotel, 1 Brighton Road, St Kilda

The Terminus Hotel in Abbotsford was the local watering hole for undercover cop Peter Church (Peter Phelps), while the Greyhound Hotel provided the location for many of the character's undercover drug busts. The Australian Education Union building in Abbotsford served as the exterior for police headquarters, and the former convent chapel St Heliers, in Abbotsford, played the role of a psychiatric hospital.

Blue Heelers
Castlemaine
The goldfields town of Castlemaine was the 'stand-in' for aerial shots of the fictional town of Mt Thomas. A former pub in the town - the Imperial Hotel - was used for exteriors of Blue Heeler's fictional pub, which was The Imperial Hotel.

Cash & Company
Emu Bottom Homestead, Sunbury

Set in the gold rush era of the 1850s, Cash & Company was filmed on the property of the historic Emu Bottom Homestead, Sunbury.

The Flying Doctors
Minyip
The township of Minyip, 300km North West of Melbourne, provided the setting for The Flying Doctor's fictional location of Cooper's Crossing.

The Gershwin Room at Melbourne's legendary the Esplanade Hotel is the locale for the SBS music trivia show RocKwiz.

Live at the Chapel

The performance space Chapel off Chapel, a converted church in Prahran, was the venue for music show Live at the Chapel. Broadcast on Channel 10 and then Channel 7, the show featured such acts as Neil Finn, Something For Kate, Train, Ben Folds, Nickelback and Midnight Oil.

Melbourne's third commercial television station (now the Ten Network) began broadcasting in1964. Its state-of-the-art studios were specially built on 10 acres of land in what was then known as East Burwood. Popular shows to have been produced on-site include the music show Go!!, Young Talent Time, The Comedy Company, and Prisoner, for which prison bars were the added to the exterior. Global Television Studios, now owners of the site, continue to provide production services to shows such as Rove Live, and it remains the production home for Neighbours. The Lassiters Complex in Neighbours was originally constructed from the recycled sets of a tropical island drama, Holiday Island, which flopped miserably in the early Eighties due to the inability of Melbourne's weather to convincingly subsitute for the tropics.

Channel 9 Studios

Converted from an old soup factory (and a piano factory prior to that), the GTV9 Studios were opened by Sir Dallas Brooks in 1957. Graham Kennedy's long-running In Melbourne Tonight established a reputation for the station as the home of live variety television. Such was the success of IMT that a studio was purpose-built for the program. Studio 9, at the time, was the largest television studio in the Southern Hemisphere. Popular shows produced at the GTV9 studios have included The Tarax Show, World Championship Wrestling, The Ernie Sigley Show, The Don Lane Show, Sale of the Century, New Faces, Hey Hey it's Saturday and The Footy Show.

Channel 7 Studios

HSV7 was granted a broadcast license in 1955 and acquired a relatively small studio space in South Melbourne. On a Sunday morning you could tune into the three-hour broadcast of World of Sport, hosted by Ron Casey and Doug Elliott, with regulars Ron Casey and Jack Dyer. The popular sports round-up ran from 1959 until 1987 and helped forge Channel 7's reputation as the sporting channel. A Saturday night in the 1970s wasn't complete without retiring with The Penthouse Club. Hosted by the inimitable Mary Hardy, the show presented variety entertainment along with harness racing coverage and lotto results. Later productions at the Dorcas Street studios included Fast Forward and Tonight Live with Steve Vizard.

ABC2 Melbourne - ABC Studios

Studio spaces for the fledgling national broadcaster were annexed by government from the historic mansion Ripponlea. ABV2 opened on 19 November 1956, just 4 days prior to the Melbourne Olympics. Early productions included the Six O'Clock Rock live music program, hosted by Johnny O'Keefe, and the pantomime-style childrens program Adventure Island (1967-72). The first successful Australian television soap opera, Bellbird, was filmed at the ABC's Elsternwick studios (the country town of Daylesford provided the scenery for the opening credits). In the 70s and 80s, many a teenager queued to be part of the studio audience for music show Countdown. The studios of the ABC have also played host to comedy favourites such as Australia You're Standing in It, The Gillies Report, The D-Generation, The Big Gig and The Late Show.
