The National Trust is carefully watching many developments in and around Melbourne... Give them your support!
MELBOURNE'S HISTORIC INNER SUBURBS
The National Trust is carefully watching the upcoming decisions due out of the recent VCAT hearing over the proposed high-rise development on Smith Street, Collingwood. The Trust contends the proposal is massively over scaled for this state-significant classified shopping strip, and representation was made to VCAT. Planning Minister Rob Hulls turned down the request from the Collingwood Action Group for the proposal to be "called - in". The Trust has also been active in the preparation of the draft Urban Design Framework for the area.
WINDSOR HOTEL - SOLD
The Trust classified Windsor Hotel on Spring Street has been sold. Once ' the place to stay' in Melbourne the 1883 historic hotel hosted A-list celebrities from actors Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh to US Heavy Metal rock group Metallica and local icons including Dame Nellie Melba. The Trust met with the new owners soon after it learned of the imminent sale and was pleased to learn the developers plan to return the Windsor to world - class standard. We look forward to working with the new owners and their consultants on this plan to help recapture this grand old hotel's finer days.
POINT NEPEAN
As the development of a holistic master plan and an integrated management model for Point Nepean continues, a series of workshops has been held with community stakeholders including the National Trust. The Mornington Peninsula Branch of the Trust has been an active participant in the community consultation process as have members of the Trust Board who continue to represent the Trust on the State Government's Minister's Advisory Committee and the Commonwealth Government's Point Nepean Community Trust. The Commonwealth launched the National Centre for Marine and Coastal Conservation to be operated by the Australian Maritime College in June giving a cheque to the College for $9.7M
