This week patient patrons of the arts are treated to the biennial Castlemaine State Festival and one of Melbourne's most anticipated musical treats makes its return with the Brunswick Music Festival making itself known loudly and proudly.
The City of Whitehorse flies the green flag with Sustainable Living Week, while under the rainbow banner there's the Melbourne Queer Film Festival.
It's also a time for many other flags with celebrations honouring Koorie culture along with Malaysian, Greek and not to forget Ireland with St Patrick's Day falling thankfully on the weekend.

Sustainability Launch with Rob Gell
Whitehorse Sustainable Living Week | Rob Gell
Acclaimed Environmentalist Rob Gell will launch the 7th annual Whitehorse Sustainable Living Week with a free talk at the Whitehorse Centre. Discussing sustainability challenges identified at 2012's Rio +20 Earth Summit, he'll also offer practical sustainability advice.

Mad March, rightly named for the abundance of events held in what's most definitely Melbourne's busiest month of the year, literally has something for everyone with a range of exciting events that cover everything from comedy, arts and theatre to food, children's festivals, world class sporting events and much, much more!

The 'Maine Event
Castlemaine State Festival, a biennial event, features a program for young and old with live theatre performances, music, visual arts, dance and a program especially for young people. Events are held in Castlemaine's historic theatres and halls as well as other unique venues including gardens, mines and quarries.

Black Harmony Gathering, held at Fairfield Amphitheatre, is a free Koorie and multicultural celebration, now in its 10th year. Showcasing culturally diverse art, dance performances, circus, food and more, the festival concert features Kutcha Edwards and band, Skin Choir, Unwritten History, Afrovival and other guests.

Deaf in Brunswick
Brunswick Music Festival, one of Victoria's most lauded multicultural events, offers a great program of concerts and attractions with this year's festival celebrating 25 years by presenting a quarter-century retrospective of their favourite festival artists along with the best of new local talent and brilliant international acts.

Jailhouse Rock Festival, one of Australia's longest running festivals to celebrate the classic rock era of the 1950's, takes the town of Ararat back in time for a swinging festival that features live music performances, dance nights, competitions, displays of classic motorbikes and hot-rods, specialist trade stalls and much more.

Queered for Take-off
Melbourne Queer Film Festival, with screenings held at ACMI Cinemas, Hoyts Melbourne Central and Loop Bar, presents the latest and greatest in queercentic feature films. Along with documentaries and shorts sourced from both here and overseas, the festival includes special events and filmmaker awards.

L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, the largest and most successful fashion event held in Australia, presents world-class runway shows that showcase the talents of established and emerging designers, beauty workshops, industry seminars, live entertainment and many more events at various venues.

Malaysian, Irish... It's All Greek to Me
Antipodes Festival takes over Melbourne with the Greek Precinct of Lonsdale Street celebrating their annual Glendi. With two main stages showcasing the talents of local and international acts comprised of over 300 performers, the free event also features food stalls, children's entertainment and rides, dancing and more.

Fiesta Malaysia captures the spirit and culture of Malaysia with a celebration of lively song and dance performances to showcase Malaysia's famously multi-racial society. Taking place at Federation Square, the free event also features great attractions for the family with delicious foods, art and traditional costume displays.

St Patrick's Day, celebrating Ireland's favourite saint and bane of all (which is none) Irish snakes, goes hand in hand with a Guinness, widely regarded as the figurehead drink of the day. Guinness have offered a Black List where you'll not only find the perfect pub for St Pat's, but also the chance to win a trip to Ireland.

Herb & Chilli Festival, held in Wandin, is a chance to see a huge range of chilli plants, fruit and over 300 different herbs with delicious samples on offer. With stalls offering sauces, dips and boutique beers, there's also live entertainment and activities for kids, cooking demonstrations, and a traditional native American performance.

Hot Sauce & Fiery Foods Festival, held this year at its new venue of Sandown Racecourse, is Australia's longest running Chilli festival. Along with showcasing Gourmet Food and Boutique Beers, the weekend event also features fun activities for children, live music, chilli eating competitions and classic car displays.

Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na Fledermaus!
Revenge of the Bat (Die Fledermaus) will be performed at Preston's Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre. Presented by Co-Opera, the sparkling new production of Strauss' much loved opera transports the tale to the fizzy times of 1920's Art Deco Australia to create a chic and funny adaptation performed in English.

The Broken Streamer, performed at Prahran's Chapel Off Chapel, tells the story of a family of survivors from the Lodz Ghetto in Poland, where 240,000 Jews were killed in World War II. Drawing parallels to current plights of refugees today, the play highlights how Australia is now a culturally diverse country and all the better for it.

May & Alia do Pirates! (of Penzance) is a low-fi homage to the cheesy, over-the-top silly-ness of Gilbert and Sullivan's original masterpiece. Performed at The Butterfly Club's new Melbourne location, two thespians find themselves having to perform the famed production alone, relying on their wits and sock puppets.

Bubs & Weddings (In Which Order's Up To You)
Geelong Baby Expo offers an extensive range of information to families on options and choices for everything from birth, conception and pregnancy to babies and raising toddlers. Held at Geelong's Club Italia, the expo will include guest speakers, workshops, exhibitors, entertainment, door prizes and a handcraft market.
