Newsletter | #296 | What's On this Week |
Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday to Monday, September 4 to 10, 2012.
This week... There's an event or two for the tree-huggers with the Green Family Life Festival offering a family-friendly day in Richmond where you can also learn some tips on sustainable living, while the Kino also joins the effort with the Environmental Film Festival.
For film buffs this week, we have the return of the Russian Resurrection Film Festival and Korean Film Festival.
And as spring gets under way and we trade those wintery sniffles for some pollen-inspired sneezes, you'll find our School Holiday Guide also under way with many more events to come. Also in line with spring, there's already the onset of the numerous fairs, fetes and market events that inevitably pop up.
I'd like to give special mention to the Art4All Festival at Fairfield Primary School, as it was the stomping ground of my dear mother, whose maiden name back in the day unfortunately rhymed with a word to do with flatulence.
So should anyone attending find some faded graffiti in the schoolgrounds that alludes to anything of the sort, I'd kindly ask that they cover it with one of the paintings there.
I'd advise my mother to do likewise, except I'd worry that she'd recognise the writing, what with it also being where I'd cool my jets if told off when visiting the grandparents.

Alas, Poor Yorick Club.. Too Many Knew You Well
The very first literary club to be formed in Australia began in Melbourne in 1868. Formed by a group of journalists, some of which wrote for The Age and The Argus - a major paper back at this time - the group called themselves the Yorick Club, named after one of the characters in Shakespeare's Hamlet.
The club began as an informal gathering at a cafe, but due to the stolid nature of the regular patrons there the founders of the club, which was considered rather avant-garde and bohemian at the time, decided to rent a room next door to the Argus office.
Originally intended as an exclusive club for members of the press, the group had to broaden their criteria for membership as there were not enough people who qualified to make up sufficient numbers.
