City of Darebin

City of Darebin

The City of Darebin has a Vision for this city, one which we are committed to achieving. The Vision has been carefully constructed to illustrate, with just a few words, our aspirations for the Darebin community.

But in order to understand what we mean by a diverse and democratic city where citizens work together to advance community life, further explanation is needed.

Darebin is a diverse city, not only in terms of multicultural, language and ethnic diversity, but we are also diverse in socio-economic background, employment status and occupation, housing needs and preferences and, perhaps most importantly, Darebin's community has a diverse range of opinions, aspirations and expectations,

The Darebin community values its democracy very highly, and Council is committed to a governance process that is fair, open and transparent. For residents to be proud of their democracy Council must be doing a good job of focussing on transparency, inclusiveness and leadership. We must also be seen to be making sound decisions and balancing needs appropriately.

Darebin's citizens are empowered to actively participate in decision making processes and have an obligation to be involved in our governance. As a community, we rely on active citizenship to empower ourselves to help shape the decisions which affect us, and to influence the ongoing development of our neighbourhoods.

Our Vision is for a community that works together to advance community life. This reflects our desire for a city which is united in a common understanding of what we what to achieve. We will work to build a community that is as committed as we are to providing opportunities for people in employment, entertainment, recreation, leisure and cultural pursuits. Our decisions will be influenced by their potential to improve things for our community, and lay the foundations for the community of the future.

Darebin City Council have Customer Service Centres at Northland, Preston, Northcote and Reservoir.

City of Darebin

The City of Darebin is a large municipality. In fact, with over 130,000 residents and 55,000 properties, our municipality is home to one of the largest most diverse communities anywhere in Victoria. The physical character of Darebin differs significantly from the inner city suburbs of Alphington, Fairfield, Northcote and Westgarth through the established areas of Thornbury and Preston, out to the relatively new areas of Reservoir and the Bundoora North East Growth Corridor.

Darebin's natural environment is just as extensive, as it is bounded on two sides by the Darebin and Merri Creeks and is home to the Central Creek Grasslands and other significant habitat areas at Bundoora Park and in and around La Trobe University. Edwardes Lake is a major recreational feature in the municipality's north, Darebin Parklands to the south, and significant works have been completed to transform the former Northcote Tip to All Nations Park.

In addition, the City of Darebin owns, controls, manages or maintains an extensive range of physical assets. These include over 600 km of roads, 2,000 km of drains, 300 buildings, 450 hectares of parkland and over 45,000 street trees.

Location of Darebin

The City of Darebin covers approximately 53 square kilometres and extends from Heidelberg Road in the south to Mahoneys Road in the north, bounded by Darebin Creek to the east and Merri Creek to the west.

Surrounding municipalities include Whittlesea to the north, Banyule to the east, Yarra to the south and Moreland to the west.

Darebin is located within 20 minutes of Melbourne Airport, the Melbourne CBD and Melbourne Port.

The municipality is well serviced by a high quality road network, Bell Street provides a direct east west route across the municipality while High Street, St Georges Road and Plenty Road provide access to municipalities north and south of Darebin.

The City of Darebin is also in close proximity to a number of regional transport routes including the Tullamarine Freeway - City Link, the Northern/Western Ring Road, the Eastern Freeway and the Hume Highway.
