The Australian Ballet: Mayerling

Mayerling

The Australian Ballet presents
Mayerling
A gripping story of obsession and scandal

Behind the grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian court lies a world of political pressure, private turmoil and dangerous desires. At its centre is Crown Prince Rudolf, an heir whose troubled life drives this intense ballet drama.

Created by master storyteller Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Mayerling explores the social, political and personal forces that push Rudolf towards desperate measures. Intricate choreography turns emotional conflict into compelling theatre, revealing the darkness beneath royal privilege.

The role of Rudolf is one of ballet's great tests of athletic and artistic endurance. Rarely off stage, the dancer must sustain both the physical demands of the choreography and the emotional weight of a man caught in a destructive spiral.

Set to music by Franz Liszt, arranged by John Lanchbery, Mayerling offers an absorbing theatrical experience where obsession, despair and scandal unfold through dance.
